What Is MCP (Model Context Protocol)? The Complete Guide

Introduction: The Problem MCP Solves

AI models like Claude and GPT-4 are remarkably capable at reasoning, writing, and analysis. But they share a fundamental limitation: they are isolated from your real data. Ask an AI to check your database for overdue invoices, pull the latest sales numbers from your CRM, or query a REST API for shipping status, and it cannot do it. The model has no way to reach outside its context window and interact with live systems.

Until now, bridging this gap required writing custom integration code for every combination of AI model and data source. Need Claude to access PostgreSQL? Build a bespoke connector. Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that solves this problem. Created by Anthropic and adopted across the AI ecosystem, MCP provides a universal protocol for AI models to discover and interact with external data sources, databases, APIs, and tools in a secure, standardized way.

How MCP Works

At its core, MCP uses a client-server architecture with a straightforward communication flow. Here is how the pieces fit together:

In simple terms, an MCP server is like a translator. It sits between the AI model and your data, speaking the AI's language on one side and your database or API's language on the other. When a user asks the AI a question that requires live data, the AI recognizes it needs a tool, calls the appropriate MCP server, gets the result, and incorporates it into its response.

A Typical MCP Interaction

Consider a scenario where a user asks an AI agent: "How many open support tickets do we have this week?" Here is what happens behind the scenes:

  1. The AI agent receives the question and reviews its available tools (discovered from connected MCP servers).
  2. It identifies a tool called query_support_tickets exposed by a PostgreSQL MCP server.
  3. The agent constructs a tool call with the appropriate parameters (status: open, date range: this week).
  4. The MCP client sends the JSON-RPC request to the MCP server.
  5. The MCP server executes the database query and returns the results.
  6. The agent receives the data and formulates a natural language response: "There are 47 open support tickets this week, up 12% from last week."

All of this happens in a single conversation turn, transparently. The user asks a question and gets an answer grounded in real, live data.

Why MCP Matters

Before MCP, the AI integration landscape looked like this: every AI model needed a custom connector for every data source. Five models times ten data sources equals fifty integrations to build and maintain. Each one was brittle, bespoke, and incompatible with the others.

After MCP, the equation changes. Each data source only needs one MCP server. Each AI model only needs one MCP client. The protocol handles everything in between. Ten data sources plus five models equals ten servers and five clients -- not fifty custom integrations.

Database Servers

These connect AI directly to relational databases. A PostgreSQL MCP server, for example, exposes tools like query, list_tables, and describe_table.
